DARK OF THE MOON by Howard Richardson and William Berney and Directed by John Vanderplough and Produced by Burt McCollum
Based on “The Ballad of Barbara Allen” and set in southern Appalachia about 100 years ago, DARK OF THE MOON tells the story of John, a witchboy, who falls in love with Barbara Allen and wants to become human so he can marry her. The Conjur Woman allows him to do so provided that Barbara remains faithful to him for a year. As the townfolk start to realize John’s true nature, they begin a witchhunt for a real witch. DARK OF THE MOON opened on Broadway in March, 1945, and played 318 performances. It has been revived several times professionally and performed by many high schools and community theatres.

Auditions will be cold readings from the script which is written in the Appalachian dialect. (Note that this is not “southern”.) Because the script is challenging to read, it is suggested that-- in advance--everyone auditioning review the video of a high school production to get a feel for the play and how its language is used poetically at: www.vimeo.com/58252023 & www.vimeo.com/58252024 (Acts 1 & 2). While the play has music in it, it is not a “musical” in the usual sense. Ages 17+ only-- no children’s roles.
